Driver at a Glance™
As a direct extension of our video behavior analysis work, SET has developed an intelligent driver monitoring
system for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Our system uses dash mounted video cameras
to automatically monitor, analyze, and archive videos of a driver’s gaze activities for the purpose of
assessing dangerous driving behaviors. Among other capabilities, the Driver at a Glance™ system is able to
automatically determine the beginning and end of a gazing activity, and index the corresponding video sequence
by the functional area of interest, duration, and direction of gaze. Unlike the cumbersome manual system used
today, Driver at a Glance™ employs advanced machine vision techniques to perform its video analysis and indexing
tasks at dramatically improved speeds and accuracy levels.
3D Modeling
Automatic acquisition of 3–D models of humans, vehicles, and structures is in high demand for gaming, navigation,
and computer vision systems. However, manual construction of such models takes far too long to be of practical
use, and specialized sensors such as Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (IFSAR) and Laser Induced Differential
Absorption Radar (LIDAR) are not feasible for many applications. SET researchers are developing shape-from-motion
techniques for automatically constructing detailed 3D models from image sequences captured by a single, consumer
grade, handheld video camera equipped with a commercial inertial measurement unit. These techniques will allow
for the rapid and inexpensive acquisition of 3D models in unconstrained indoor and outdoor environments.
